GRAMMAR – BEGINNERS - LESSON SEVEN – THE PRESENT TENSE

WE USE THE PRESENT TENSE TO DESCRIBE THINGS WE DO EVERYDAY. WE USUALLY ADD AN ‘S’ TO THE VERB WHEN USING THE SUBJECTS HE, SHE OR IT.

SINGULAR

-       I work.
-       You work.
-       He works.
-       She works.
-       It works.

PLURAL

-       We work.
-       You work.
-       They work.


NOTE - SPELLING OF THE THIRD PERSON SINGULAR

1. We add -s to most verbs.
- Speak = Speaks
- Wear = Wears
- Live = Lives

2. With the verbs GO and Do we add –ES.
- Go = Goes
- Do = Does

3. We ad -ES if the verb ends with –S, –SH OR –CH.

- Finish = Finishes
- Watch = Watches

4. If the verb ends in -Y we change the -Y to –IES.
- Fly = Flies
- Study = Studies

5. If the verb ends with a vowel and –Y we do not change the –Y we just add –s.

-Play = Plays

PRESENT TENSE NEGATIVE

SINGULAR

DO + NOT + VERB

-       I do not play soccer.
-       You do not eat pizza.
-       He does not learn Japanese.
-       She does not swim.
-       It does not work.

PLURAL

-       You do not play tennis.
-       We do not eat sushi.
-       They do not travel.

CONTRACTIONS

-       Do + not = Don’t
-       Does + not = Doesn’t
